Ihievbe community gets first SAN; Dr Omo Eboh Omogbai Iheowa

An insurance law expert and a consummate Academician, Dr Omo Eboh Omogbai, broke myths as he joined the prestigious club of Senior Advocate of Nigeria, SAN.
Dr Omogbai thus becomes the first person from Ihievbe community in Owan East of Edo North to be so honoured with the silk robe, the highest honorary legal award in Nigeria.
He emerged from the academic category of the SAN list which was subjected to a rigorous process of selection and exclusion by the Legal Privileges council before its final confirmation
Dr Omogbai comes from what may be regarded as a predominantly legal family, with his late father, Justice Omo Eboh of the Federal Court of Appeal, said to have held the distinguished record of being the first Edo North indigene to be so appointed a judge in the 70s.
Similarly, his mother, Modupe Omo Eboh, née Modupe Akingbehin, of the Yoruba extraction and the great grand daughter of Bishop Ajayi Crowther, was born in Lagos in 1922 and attended the prestigious Queens College, Lagos, before studying Law in London.
She was the first female judge of the High Court of Nigeria and occupied various legal positions as a lawyer, magistrate, chief magistrate, administrator- general, public trustee, director of prosecution and acting solicitor- general, before she passed on in 2002. A street was later named after her in Lagos- Modupe Omo Eboh Street.
Dr Omo Eboh Omogbai, is an insurance law expert and senior partner at Consolex Legal Practitioners. He attended the Kings College, Lagos and proceeded to the University of Lagos, where he obtained a degree in Law and, thereafter, he was called to the Nigerian bar in 1985.
He also attended the London School of Economics, LSE, for his Masters degree in Law (LL.M) in 1986, graduating with distinction. In 1990, he got his PhD in Law.
A prolific author and authority on current legal trends as it affects the practise and regulation of the insurance industry, Dr Omogbai has written several books that has been published in local and international journals.
He has also delivered some thought provoking lectures and acted as the main Facilitator at several foras, including the seminar on Maritime Law for Judges organised by the Nigerian Shippers Council, in collaboration with the National Judicial lnstitute as well as the training for Judges by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA.
Dr Omogbai has authored several books on law and insurance, among which are "The Law on Insurance Contracts in Nigeria", " Casebook on Insurance Laws in Nigeria ". He's also a member of the Lagos State Law Reform Commission.
