SUBEB corruption saga;, 3 lvie clan head gets January date

By DADA AYOKHAI
The much celebrated alleged corruption case involving the clan head of 3 Ivie  in Etsako East council area, HRH Ali Sulayman, and his other co - travellers, is set to resume in early January, 2021

The fraud case for which Ali Sulayman and others are been prosecuted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, at the Benin Criminal Court presided by Justice Obviagele, was said to have been committed sometime in October, 2017.

The total amount involved in the alleged fraud case is N1. 5bn.

The offences occurred while the 3 Ivie  clan head served as the acting chairman of the state SUBEB.

: In October 2017, the EFCC hauled the accused former SUBEB top officials before the Benin Criminal Court on a broad range of corruption charges that bordered on diversion, contract splitting and inflation and other related charges.

The EFCC had relied on section 26, subsection 1 of the Corrupt Practices and other Related Offenses Act of 2000 in instituting the fraud case involving the 3 Ivie clan head and others.

Ironically, the journey to the dock for Ali Sulayman and his co- travellers followed a petition to the EFCC by a whistle blower who alleged the accused SUBEB top officials abused their office and fraudulently diverted public funds through payments for non- existent contracts, diversion of tender fees and the illegal sale of government properties.

Unfortunately, the fraud case, which has suffered several adjournments, is presently at the stage of calling witnesses by the EFCC.

: One of the charges preferred against the accused reads: "That you, Prince Stephen Alao, Adams Osabuohien, Dove Momodu, Mallam Ali Sulayman and Dr Aisosa Amadasun, sometime in the years 2013 to 2016, in Edo State, conspired to commit an offence under the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offenses Act, No. 5, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2000".

This messy fraud case has put the reputation of the Imiegba clan head on the line.
