Aziegbemi: Elders Council is not new in Edo North- Editorial
By DADA AYOKHAI
The Leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party from Edo North extraction recently inaugurated a body known as Edo North Elders Council at a ceremony which took place in Benin City, Edo State.
The August body comprising leaders of the party across the six local governments areas of EDO north has His Excellency, Chief Mike Oghiadomhe, a-two-term deputy governor of Edo State and Chief of Staff to former president GoodLuck Jonathan as the interim chairman.
According to Chief Oghiadomhe in his inaugural address, said the council will not conflict with any organs of the party and also that the Elders Council has been in existence from 1998 when the party was formed.
" As you are all aware , the party has always needed the cooperation and good counsel of elders in recent times as we do today . With the almagamation of the APC and PDP in the state recently, there is a dire need for leaders and elders to work harmoniously together . Any organisation that has no elders is doomed to fail ."
Going by the address of Oghiadomhe who luckily is part of the foundation and consistent members of the party since her inception is an open ended .
Less than 48 hours after the inauguration, one of the party's chairmen from Akoko Edo went to press to condemn the inauguration of the Elders Council .
The Edo State PDP chairman issued a press statement where he invariably claimed that the party constitution does not recongise any other bodies outside the two created by the party’s constitution.
The Akoko Edo PDP Chairman’s statement to say the least, was laced with external influence and also in bad taste.
The party's chairman was very much in a hurry to issue a press statement on the Edo North Elders Council especially when it has not in anyway churned out any programmes or statements which contradict any party's policy or programme.
From available records, there was an Edo North PDP Elders Council under the leadership of late Alhaji Inu Umoru.
The meeting of the body was usually held at the residences of prominent leaders. Such meetings have taken place in Polaris Hotel Afashio owned by the late chief Bruno Oshiopekhai
.HCouncil.
The Edo State former PDP chairman , Chief Dan Orbih, who invariably hails from Edo North cannot claim ignorance of Edo North Elders Council during his tenure of office.
The state's party chairman, Chief Aziegbemi should have taken a step to meet the leaders of the Elders Council for a meeting instead of issuing a press statement on internal party affairs which might suggest an external influence.
The issue should have been the modules operandi of selecting members rather than the existence of the council.
Again, why is the chairman of the party now calling for the inauguration of the two organs he claimed are the recongnised, this to say the least spank mischief.
