Elders council; Akoko Edo PDP chairman press statement was a ruse, and stage managed

By DADA AYOKHAI

The controversy surrounding the inauguration of Edo north PDP Elders council is yet to douse down as the PDP chairmen in owan west and east chief Leslie Ebosojie and Aigbodion oko  David have described the purported press statement attributed to the party's local government chairman in Akoko Edo as a "ruse and stage managed".

However, in a swift reaction, the two PDP local government chairmen, and four co chairmen disowned Mr Ogunibi and said he was acting alone.

In particular, the Owan East and Owan West local government chairmen disputed his claims, stating there was no record of any meeting or consultation where a collective decision was taken to call for the disbandment of the Elders Council.

They noted, "What the PDP chairman  of Akoko Edo did is fraudulent and condemnable. Nobody appointed him as a spokesman, but he mischievously chose to ambush and blackmail the rest of us. His actions, as far as we are concerned, is stage managed and for probably for  pecuniary reasons".

. They, however, pointed out that the main challenge facing the party is not that of the Elders Council , but how to commence the e- registration exercise of both the old PDP members as well as the former APC members now in the party.

The chairmen reminded the party leadership of the need to quickly implement the e- registration exercise, as earlier agreed upon by stakeholders across Edo North district, noting that if well conducted , it would help integrate and douse all tensions currently pulling the party apart at ward, LGA, senatorial and state levels.

Similarly, the state leadership of the party, led by its state party chairman, Chief Tony Aziegbemin, weighed into the dispute and rather than reprimand the erring Akoko _Edo  PDP chairman, he supported his actions, thereby polarising the crisis.

Even as they hailed the idea behind the creation of the Elders Council, they declared that though the body is largely advisory, it's existence will hasten the harmonisation efforts in the party.

They further submitted that there was nothing illegal or unconstitutional in the formation of the Council, alluding to the fact that harmonisation of groups and tendencies has been a part and parcel of the PDP since its formation in 1998.

They stated also  that the composition of the Council took cognisance of the dichotomy between the mainstream PDP and the breakaway faction of the APC which fused to deliver victory in 2020, adding  that the Council would help bind all the centrifugal forces in the party into a cohesive unit as well as douse tensions.
