Obaseki continues Oshiomhole's Emperorship on demolition of property

By DADA AYOKHAI

It seems  the disdainful manner prominent citizens were treated and the utter disregard for judicial  process in the demolition of property  during the oshiomhole administration has once again reared its ugly head in the state.

The state government had, penultimate week, gone on a demolition spree, armed with bulldozers and some uniformed men in tow, to demolish some choice property  belonging to three notable members of the APC who are also close political allies of the former governor, Comrade Adams Oshiomole.

Those who had their property reduced to rubbles during the demolition exercise carried out by officials of the state government includes  Dr Pius Odubu, a former deputy governor of the state; Prof Julius Ihonvbere, a member of the House of Representatives and Mr Mike Itemuagbo, a    renowned sports marketer in the country.

Recall how Comrade Oshiomole ruled the state with iron fist, demolishing  property whilst litigation was still ongoing and daring anyone to challenge his authority as an emperor.

During his tenure, the state almost went haywire with the tales of the agony and pains visited on prominent citizens by the former governor's demolition squad.

Comrade governor's demolition squad descended on the Benin residence of an illustrious son of the state, Prof Oshodi, the former vice chancellor,  University of Benin, neither did they allow him remove his valuables before the bulldozers set in, nor did they allowed him to explored all  the judiciary process.

However, in a stout defense of its action, the state government in a
statement issued by the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Mr Osarodion Ogie Esq, the state government said the demolition exercise was devoid of bias, insisting before the eviction that the state government had revoked the property's Certificate of Occupancy based on some identified flaws in the allocation of prime public assets to political office holders and companies by the past administration.

The statement was however  silent about the court processes duly served on it in relation to the property of the former deputy governor of the state.

in his reaction, the former deputy governor, Dr odubu said"the process leading to the purchase and acquisition of the property was legal and legitimate while the process towards the revocation and demolition is still subject to litigation in the court.  but  the government was impatient in waiting for the final determination of the suit instituted by him on the revocation order before embarking on the demolition.

Meanwhile, the Edo State chapter of the APC has cried foul over the demolition exercise.

The party's spokesperson, Mr Chris Azebamwan, said the demolition exercise was "premeditated" and aimed at intimidating, suppressing, hounding and silencing those perceived as enemies of Gov Obaseki.

According to the party,  the governor is on a revenge mission against the opposition having earlier vowed to demolish property belonging to APC chieftains in the state.

It said, "This inhuman act is taking place at a time Edo State is facing unprecedented banditry, kidnapping and cultism. Clearly, our governor has abandoned governance for the politics of bitterness and witch hunting".

Supporters of the government, however,  hailed the steps taken by the governor in recovering choice properties which belongs to the state, adding it is a "bold action" necessary to curb the land grabbing mentality common among top government functionaries who allocate choice property  to themselves and their cronies at the expense of other citizens of the state.
