Benin_ owena to construct Earth Dam in Auchi

After several years of battling acute water shortage, residents of  the commercial town of Auchi may be in for a reprieve if the efforts of Benin - Owena River Basin Development Authority to reverse the ugly trend yields fruitful results.

 To actualise its plan of providing portable water to Auchi residents and its environ, the Authority has concluded plans to construct an Earth Dam in Auchi. 

The Earth Dam  is to be situated on the course of the popular River Orle  in Auchi. 

Even with its status as the administrative nerve centre of Edo North as well as Etsako, the sight of commercial water tankers supplying portable water to the residents is a common feature in  Auchi metropolis. 

Over 70 per cent of the residents of Auchi rely heavily on commercial water  tankers for access to portable water.

 The rest rely on streams and boreholes, most of which not only entails long treks but also dependent on an epileptic public power supply

The collapsed public water scheme, water board, in Auchi, which has been in a comatose for many years now,  further compounded the plight of the residents. 

Details of the Auchi Earth Dam shows a bold step to reverse the ugly trend of acute water shortages in Auchi while also bringing succour to its residents

A glimpse of the engineering design concept of the proposed Earth Dam  along  River Orle in Auchi, indicates the dam will store as much as 67mcm of water as well as distribute up to 70 MLD to designated households. 

The other parts of the plan includes a reticulation and treatment plant, power supply mains,elevated tanks and a distribution network which would ensure clean and drinkable water produced by the dam is piped to Auchi, Iyuku, Afashio, Aviele, Agbede, Iyerekhu and other communities. 

The Authority, headed by an illustrious Auchi son, Engr Saliu Ahmed, is determined to solve the problem of access to clean water in Edo North as a whole. 

But due to budget constrains, the Authority has decided to execute the Earth Dam  projects in phases.

Auchi Microfinance Bank groans under high customers debt profiles

By DADA AYOKHAI  The management of Auchi Microfinance Bank (AMFB), yesterday, decried the high indebtedness of customers to the bank just as it urges customers to pay up in order to remain in business. Chairman of the financial institution, Hassan Momodu, expressed his resentment at its 22nd and 23rd joint annual general meetings of the bank in Auchi, Edo  According to him "We are using this medium to appeal passionately to our shareholders and the general public that are indebted to us to pay up to reduce our yearly provisioning and improve our profitability”,  Momodu also said that the increase in the fund in the period under review represented a 29 percent improvement on the fund.
