The National Executive Council (NEC) of Ambrose Alli University Alumni Association Worldwide has passed a vote of no confidence on Hon Marcus Onobun led Edo state House of Assembly.
The body described the law passed by the House tagged
Ambrose Alli University (Special Intervention Powers) provisions 2021 that led to the unilateral appointment of an acting Vice Chancellor for the university without due process by the Edo State Government and the dissolution of the Governing Council as obnoxious .
The communiqué signed by the world wide president Hon Bar Dave o.Emakunu and the Vice president,Hon Johnson Idolor Akpolomen observes that the law is capable of causing anarchy in the university and creating a legacy of military dictatorship and sought that it be repealed without further delay.
The body made the remark in a communiqué issued at the end of its emergency meeting held in Benin City on Friday, May 21, 2021.
The meeting had deliberated on series of development in AAU which include the unprecedented visitation Panel Report and the strike by all the unions in the university, among others.
It emphasizes that the appointment of an acting Vice Chancellor should follow due process and with a definite duration, after which the process of appointing a substantive Vice Chancellor should commence in accordance with the 1999 university law.
The communiqué further noted that the dissolution of the Governing Council of the university was done in bad faith and should be rescinded as there were no indicting reports against the council in the public domain.
It called on Government to immediately consider the visitation panel’s report and issue a white paper that would guide future actions in the University and in accordance with the best governance practices as was done in the case of University of Lagos recently.
While sympathizing with all the unions in the university over the hardship occasioned by non-payment of salaries, check off dues and other sundry deductions, the communiqué called on Edo State Government to as a matter of concern do the needful to enable the striking unions call off their strike and return to work.
Other areas of concern raised by the National Executive Council included under funding of the institution, repeated scandalous remarks by the Edo State Government about the products of the university and actions of the members of the Edo State House of Assembly in colluding, conniving and condoning in the enactment of the special intervention powers provision law 2021.
