Edo Central PDP Leaders reject dissolution of party's structures

By DADA AYOKHAI

Peoples Democratic Party leaders in Edo Central district rose from an expanded stakeholders meeting to reaffirm their positions on some nagging issues confronting the party in the state.

The meeting was held in the Benin residence of Senator Odion Ugbesia.

The meeting was attended by leadership of the Senatorial district which includes  Elder Odion Ugbesia and his twin brother, Hon. Barr. Akhere Ugbesia, Hon. Barr. Sergius Ogun,  Chief Ulinfoh, Engr. Gideon Ikhine, Hon. John Yakubu, Hon. Ezehi Igbas, PDP Local Government Party Chairmen in the Senatorial District, amongs others.

A major fallout of the meeting was the outright rejection of the dissolution of the party's existing structures at all levels.

Instead, stakeholders called for the adoption of an alternative means to integrate both old and new members of the party without the dissolution of the existing structures.

A seven point communiqué was later issued to buttress the position of the leaders.

In the opening paragraph of the communiqué, the leaders stated that in the overall interest of the party in the district, it had prevailed on members to exercise utmost restraint when commenting on party matters most especially in the social and conventional media in order to give peace a chance.

They also said, "The bone of contention is how best to manage the new and old party members within the party structure from wards to the state.

" Other avenues exists for members' integration rather than an outright dissolution of the Executive committees of the party from wards to the state with its attendant consequences ".

They went further to recommend that a broad based ad hoc committee of seven to ten members to be constituted by the SWC of the party to immediately work out modalities for the integration in a way that would be acceptable to the contending stakeholders.

In addition, they declared that the ad hoc committee which is to be set up by the SWC must have definitive terms of reference and should be mandated to liaise with both the old and new members across the state, stating the recommendations of the committee should be submitted to the Governor as well as the SWC for implementation.

They were, however, unanimous in their view about the suspension order imposed on one of their leader, Chief Tom Ikimi, insisting the suspension order should be revisited by the Senatorial Executive with a view to lifting it without much ado.

They equally implored the Senatorial Executive to rescind the ban on joint meetings between the old and new members of the party, saying such restrictions do not promote harmony and coexistence.

The stakeholders later passed a vote of implicit confidence on the state governor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, his deputy, Hon Philip Shuaibu as well as the state party chairman, Dr Tony Aziegbemin.
