Four detained Agba kinsmen regain freedom
By DADA AYOKHAI
The four Uneme Uzanu chiefs allegedly detained on the orders of Edo State deputy governor, Hon Philip Shaibu, have finally breathed the air of freedom.
They were said to have been granted administrative bail based on an exparte motion filed by some prominent sons and daughters of Uneme- Uzanu clan.
Ironically, the same man accused of having ordered their detention in police custody on account of their alleged role in the murder of an Igiode indigene, stood as surety for them.
The detained chiefs are Chief Emmanuel Ikeme, James Alugbei, Peter Ajegba and Anthony Adamu. The quartet were held in police custody in Benin for more than two months.
Their detention caused serious social and political ripples in both Etsako and Edo North, with people questioning where the deputy governor derived his powers to order their detention without recourse to the courts.
Giving an insight into how they regained their freedom, a former Chief Press Secretary, CPS, to the deputy governor, Mr Ebohiana Musa in a story on his wall, said the chiefs were released after an application sponsored by some prominent Uzanu citizens sailed through.
He, however, did not disclosed the court where the bail application was filed, debated and granted.
As the heat of their illegal detention intensified, the state deputy governor was forced to explain his role in the saga.
While hosting a delegation of Uzanu National Development Association, Hon Shaibu narrated his frantic efforts to secure the immediate release of the detained chiefs, adding his genuine efforts was thwarted by the ongoing nationwide strike embarked upon by judiciary workers.
But as public pressure mounted, an exparte motion was quickly filed and expeditiously determined, resulting in the release of the detained chiefs, with the deputy governor magnanimously standing surety for them.
Reacting to the development, Hon Shaibu said the detention of the chiefs was strictly a legal issue and blamed those who attempted to politicise it simply want to create an artificial wedge between him and the good people of Uzanu.
He stated further that he enjoys a robust and cordial relations with the Uzanu's, adding that Prince Clem Agba, the honourable minister of Budget and National Planning has been his good friend for a long time and that both of them have mutual respects for each other.
