Uneme Uzanu Appeal to Police IG to Release kinsmen detained by Shaibu

By DADA AYOKHAI

Community leaders of Uneme- Uzanu, South East Uneme in Etsako East local government area have risen in unison to request the immediate intervention of the Inspector General of Police to secure the release of their kinsmen held in detention for over two months on the orders of the Edo State deputy governor,    Hon Philip Shaibu

They listed the names of those being detained illegally on the orders of the state deputy governor as Chief James Alugbei, Chief Peter Ajegba, Chief Anthony Adamu and Chief Emmanuel Ikeme.

The appeal by the community leaders seeking the IG's intervention in the immediate release of the detainees came in the form of an advertorial in a national daily and signed by six titled chiefs in Uzanu.

They are Chief Zibiri Baja, , the Asama of Uzanu; Mallam Ibrahim Izenobor, the Ogamode of Uzanu; Alhaji Ibrahim omokpua, the Ogiega of Uzanu; Chief Kasimu Kadiri, the Osese of Uzanu Chief Ephraim Abu, the Egiegba of Uzanu and Chief Thankgod Aliu, the Eshiemogie of Uzanu.

According to the publication, the 4 Uzanu leaders  visited Benin, the state capital to honour an invite from the office of the deputy governor on a reconciliatory meeting when they were reportedly arrested and detained by the police on the orders of the deputy governor

Furthermore, they  disclosed that the deputy governor acting on the report by the igiode community  accused the four aa Uzanu leaders of been responsible for the murder of an Igiode indigene during the communal skirmish which  broke out between Uneme and its neighbouring community, Igiode.

However, Uneme community leaders  dismissed the allegation of murder against the detained leaders as frivolous, insisting the murder allegation in question had earlier been thoroughly investigated by the police division in Agenebode and Uzanu was exonerated of any complicity.

In addition, they noted the corpse of the deceased was subjected to autopsy in the course of the police investigation, adding the autopsy result showed the deceased died from chronic hypertension.

They added further that the  state government was actively involved in the murder investigation having closely monitored the autopsy exercise through Etsako East local government area.

The Uneme community said it is saddened by the fact that even with the glaring police and autopsy report, its leaders are still been detained on the orders of the state deputy governor.

They, therefore, appealed to the IG of police to effect the immediate release of their kinsmen so as not to thwat the  fragi peace already being existing between the two communities.

Alternatively, they argued that the leaders in question should be charged to court if there is any evidence whatsoever of their criminal involvement as against their wrongful and illegal incarceration.

It will recalled that the Edo state government recently dissolved the south East Uneme clan with headquarters at uzanu and also dethroned the royal father.
