A year without Zakawanu Garuba, Widow Pays tribute

By DADA AYOKHAI

Like a dutiful wife, justice Hassana Garuba, rekindled memories of the love that existed between her and her late hubby, Hon Zakawanu Garuba, a year after he was snatched by the cold hands of death.

In a touching one year tribute, in which she paid glowing tributes to her late hubby, justice Garuba, recounted how their shared ideal of a happy home flowered despite the odds and likened his sudden demise to the "flight of joy".

July 17, 2021, marked exactly one year Hon Zakawanu Garuba, former Speaker of Edo State House of Assembly, died.

In an emotion laden advert to mark his one year remembrance, Justice Hussaina Garuba recalled the beautiful moments they shared together and how his death left a huge vacuum yet to be filled.

Until his death, Hon Zak, as he was fondly called by friends and associates, served as a commissioner in the Security and Exchanges Commission, SEC.
He was also a first class Auchi citizen as well as a front line member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, in Edo State.

It is on record that his last political outing was the PDP primary which produced Gov Obaseki and  his deputy, Hon Philip Shuaibu, as the standard bearers of the PDP in the Edo 2020 guber poll.

Hon Garuba commanded immense political clout in Edo North, having played a leading role in the repositioning of the PDP in the district.

The law graduate of Obafemi Awolowo  University, Ile - ife, was a highly beloved son to both the aristocrats and the commoners, a vantage position upon which he built his long lasting political career on.

Some of the string of political firsts scored by the late politician includes serving his Etsako Constituency one for two tenure  and his emergence as the first Etsako to become Speaker of the state assembly on the basis of consensus.

A part of the tribute by Justice Garuba read as follows: "You are still dearly loved, eternally appreciated, never forgotten and forever missed.

Indeed, it was a special kind of elegy that can bring tears to even the strongest of men.

By every stretch of imagination, Justice Garuba has proven the profound and deep affection she shared with the late hubby.

The unquenchable love between the duo is brought home most tellingly in in one of the powerful lines where she said, "Even with the crushing pain, we kept the candle flame glowing ".
