The Edo State government recent announcement made by the deputy governor of the state, Hon Philip Shaibu, in which he conveyed the decision of the state government to take over the reconstruction of Lawani road in Igarra, Akoko Edo council area has continued to generate mixed reactions in the local government.
The state decision seems to have raised serious concerns among the people about the genuineness behind the move, particularly against the backdrop of funds paucity and its failed promises to deliver on similar roads in the locality.
Some of the Akoko Edo leaders who spoke under anonymities pointed to the fact that the state government, which has so far failed to either formally flags off or resumes meaningful reconstruction work on the numerous deplorable roads in Akoko Edo, is quick to take over the reconstruction of Lawani road on the basis of a social media post so as to score cheap political points.
In his reaction, the PDP Senatorial chairman in the Edo North district, Hon Shegun Saiki said the state government decision to take over the reconstruction of the road was perfectly in order.
According to him, the road in question is one of the township roads in the local government headquarters, Igarra, hence the need to have the road to be part of standard roads constructed by the state government in the town.
Hon Saiki specifically mentioned some of the standard roads constructed by state government which include Idiba street, Rest House , Igarra Market, lgarra Township, Afehkai and Secretariat roads among others.
His APC counterpart in the district, Barrister SS Mayaki, said the state government lacked the power to take over what it never gave out in the first instance.
According to him, the state deputy governor comrade Philip Shaibu was only being clever by half by inspecting the federal roads and refused to do similar thing to those abandoned by the state government which littered across the local government.
He said "The same man who did the viral video on the road also did similar thing about the deplorable school buildings in the area but the state deputy governor turned the other eye to that".
Some opinion leaders who spoke on the state government's intervention said, it was "hasty and needless", adding that a more sensitive government would have recalled the contractor to site instead of playing to the gallery and if necessary prosecuted.
They noted that much as they appreciated the quick response of the government on the Lawani road project, they also pointed out the utter neglect of Akoko Edo roads by the state government.
In furtherance of their argument, they recalled that the government on the inception of Mr Godwin Obaseki in office, awarded contracts for the construction of 12 roads in Akoko Edo, saying the awards were advertised in the state owned newspaper, "The Observer", regretting nothing came out of the whole show boating.
Some of the Akoko Edo roads listed for reconstruction include: Atte road, Egbetue road in Ososo, Uneme Erhurun road, Somorika road, Okpe road, Ikakuma road, Ogbe - Akpama road, Ojirami - Afekuru road, Imoga road, Ososo - Okpella road,Ugboshi-ile road and Ikiran Ile road.
None of these roads, according to them, has either been flagged off or witnessed any meaningful construction work in the past five years under the Obaseki's dispensation.
