Okpella mourns "Murdered" Army General, Hussaini Ahmed,
By DADA AYOKHAI
The Okpella people from Etsako East local government area of Edo state are at present on a mourning mood over the gruesome murder of their son, Major General Hussaini Ahmed.
The late Army General was the former Provost Marshall of the Nigerian Army during the tenure of former Chief of Army Staff, COAS, Lt General Tukur Yusuf, who was killed by suspected bandits around Abaji, along the Lokoja - Abuja highway.
The late army general is said to have attended the burial of one of his cousins in Okpella and was heading back to his duty post in Abuja, along with his driver and in-law, when the gunmen sprang from the bush and accosted them.
Some erroneous reports have suddenly appeared in public domain claiming the late army general was of northern origin.
According to Hon Momoh Armiyau aka Mbakwe , the former chairman of Etsako East local government area, said the late army general is from Awuyemi Okpella. "He is my cousin" he was born and brought up in Maiduguri.
This clarification became absolutely necessary following the controversy about the actual state of origin of the late army general.
The false reports specifically pinned his state of origin to Maiduguri, Bornu State capital. This is, of course, based on the fact that he was born in Maiduguri.
However, fresh facts on his parentage showed that the late army general is of Etsako extraction.
According to the emerging facts which were put out by those close to the late army general, in order to quell the raging dispute about his ancestry, it is said that both of his parents were from Okpella in Etsako East local government area, stressing, they settled in that part of the country for a long time
True and true, he had Etsako blood in his veins even though he lived and grew up in the northern axis.
In recent times, those in the know of his subtle moves to reunite with his kith and kin in Okpella also noted it was in the course of doing so that he met his untimely death at the hands of suspected bandits.
The gunmen were said to have opened fire on his vehicle. They later abducted his in-law to an unknown destination.
Maj Gen. Ahmed's last duty post was the Nigerian Army Resource Centre, Abuja.
Sources said the soft spoken and well beloved army general did not travel with his retinue of escorts.
The remains of the deceased senior army officer was accorded a befitting muslim burial at the Lungi Barracks Cemetery on Friday, July 16.
The Director, Army Public Relations, Brigadier General Onyema Nwachukwu, confirmed his death via a press statement titled, "Former Army Provost Marshall Passes on".
It read, " With a heavy heart, the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen. Faruq Yahaya, officers and soldiers of the Nigerian Army regret to announce the passing on of Maj Gen Hassan Ahmed, a former Provost Marshall of the Nigerian Army.
"A delegation from the Army Headquarters led by the Chief of Policy and Plans (Army), Maj Gen Anthony Omozoje, had visited the widow and other members of the bereaved family".
Others who visited to commiserate with the family include members of the Nigerian Army Officers' Wives Association, NAOWA led by its national president, Mrs Stella Omozoje.
