By DADA AYOKHAI
The quest as to who represents Edo North in the Senate come 2023 is taking a new dimension following the declaration of interest by the Owans to present a consensus candidate for the slot.
The senatorial seat for the district is expected to become vacant in 2023. The present occupant, Sen Francis Alimikhena, is from Etsako and his eight year tenure will terminate by 2023 .
Power shift according to the Senator Braimoh should shift to another axis in the zone, in the spirit of the fairness and Inclusiveness among the 3 clans that makes up the axis.
Sen Yisa Braimoh , the National Leader of PDP for Owan East and Owan Weat LGA’s , dropped the hints of the resolve by the Owans to field a consensus candidate in the race for the district's sole senatorial ticket in 2023 during an interview marking his 79th birthday anniversary.
He added, however, that they intend to do so under the PDP banner, submitting that it is a sign of their implicit confidence in the ability of the party to create a level playing field for all interested aspirants.
Election into the national assembly is scheduled for February 2023 going by INEC timetable and party candidates are expected to emerge by sept 2022.
Sen Braimoh, a prominent Edo North citizen and staunch PDP leader, remains the first Owan indigene to represent the district in the senate between 2007 and 2011.
In the words of Sen Braimoh, "Owan will vie for the senatorial ticket in 2023 under the PDP platform. The reason is basically to right the wrong of past marginalisation visited on our people".
The immensely popular grassroot mobiliser further disclosed that this time around the OWANS will mobilise every available resource at its disposal in support of power shift and equity.
: He further stated, "In 1994, l resigned my appointment as Special Adviser to the honourable minister of power and steel and joined other notable Edo North leaders to initiate the Afenmai Development Association, ADA, which worked collaboratively with Etsako Club 81' to champion the cause of Edo North to be allowed to produce the state governor as well as the almost successful bid for the creation of Afemesan state, which was later Christened “ the Afuze declaration.”
Other notable players who were deeply involved in the ADA movement at that time time included late Col Shielu, as chairman; late Chief Egbeadokhai , the 1st Sec , Chief Emasealu, as second secretary; late Chief Tony Momoh and the present Otaru of Auchi.
Auchi, he noted, served as the command post for the struggle, between 1995 and 1997, from where ADA was able to galvanise support for the movement, with the catchy slogan "Isama nihi Isama".
An Owan based political analyst, Mr Idonigie, said he is one of those who support the clamour for a power shift, pointing out that the senator possesses the political clout and goodwill to reach out and sell the idea to other critical stakeholders in the district.
According to Idonigie who also described Sen Braimoh as one of the few Owan politicians with solid political alliances across the entire Edo North, stating he could use this reach to convince our brothers in Etsako and Akoko Edo to concede the senatorial slot to the OWANS .
