By DADA AYOKHAI
Hajia Maryam Abubakar , a former Edo State Commissioner of Economic Development is set for a major milestone in Edo state politics with her eyes on becoming the APC women leader in the forthcoming state congress, slated for October 2 in Benin, the Edo State capital.
After a glorious banking career, Hajia Abubakar ventured into partisan politics and served as a commissioner during the first tenure of Gov Obaseki.
Having consulted widely with critical stakeholders on her aspiration and having also secured their nod to forge on, Hajia Abubakar said the main compelling reason behind her desire to become the next APC women leader in Edo State is predicated on the urge to improve the lot of the womenfolks and to establish an effective channel to ventilate their political viewpoints.
She said, "I've decided to offer myself to serve Edo women as their mouthpiece. My coming out is to make a big statement and to break the political glass ceiling which often tends to drown the voices of our women".
She further noted that under her watch, Edo women would regain their pride of place in politics and other spheres of life, stressing she will ensure their voices are hyped in a most resounding manner for the benefit of all.
Alluding to the " Soro Soke" slogan used by the #EndSARS campaigners, Hajia Abubakar promised to ensure the effective ventilation of the concerns and feelings of Edo women.
Reeling out some of her most notable accomplishments as a former commissioner in charge of budget and economic planning, stating that out of her deep concerns for the lot of women in the state, she was able to attract a lot of donor partner projects which focused mainly on reducing poverty, women empowerment, healthcare, sanitation and child education across the wards, communities and LGA's in the state.
Drawing heavily from successes recorded in her pet NGO project, Olere Women Empowerment Initiative in Etsako West council area, via which she was able to empower women in her locality with soft loans, Hajia Abubakar vowed to replicate same if elected and urged those who are yet to benefit from the activities of the NGO to visit its Auchi office to access its interest free loans.
Also as part of her notable accomplishments while in office, Hajia Abubakar was able to leverage on her position to attract the SEEFOR projects, a World Bank and other donor institutions financed project located in Etsako West, which has impacted positively on the lives of rural women.
From the look of things, given her clout, carriage and exceptional ability as a team player, it sure seems like a foregone conclusion that Hajia Abubakar will emerge as the next APC women leader in Edo State.
