Owans embark on mission to complete Police secondary school at Ora
By DADA AYOKHAI
Five years after, the Nigerian Police Secondary School in Oke-Ora in Owan West Local Government Area was established in principle by the 18th, Nigerian Inspector-General of Police, Barrister Solomon Arase, the school was yet to properly take off.
Solomon Arase, who was the Nigerian Inspector-General of Police between April 21, 2015 and June 21, 2016 announced the establishment of the school in his maternal mother's local government of origin.
Investigation reveals that the school was yet to take off due to lack of infrastructures. This also made the school not listed among the Nigerian Police secondary school because of its non-functioning.
When completed, the school, the first of its kind in Edo State is expected to serve both the civilian and police population in the state
The school which was part of the former Inspector General of Police, legacy project has it buildings suffered serious setback since the approval in principle for the establishment of the school did not impose any burden of duty on the government to erect the edifice.
Instead, the benefitting community was expected to take charge of the erection of the buildings and other aspects.
The choice of Owan West is said to have been largely influenced by the fact that the axis, more than any other area in the state, has produced more police officers, whether serving or retired.
Going by the accounts of a reliable source privy to the details of the project, the former IGP in the twilight of his career, first toyed with the idea of having a Mopol squadron to be established in Owan West, his maternal place.
Somehow, the police high command lacked the funds to embark on such a huge project, the source added.
With the prospect looking dim and with no Owan person of substantial means coming to support the project, the then Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomole stepped in with promises to bankroll the project.
However, rather than cite the Mopol squadron in Owan as previously conceptualised, the location was moved to Iyamho, Etsako West where the comrade governor hailed from.
As an alternative and to also compensate Owan, the former IGP now considered the idea of a police secondary school, with all the factors earlier enumerated working in the favour of Owan.
For instance, the axis has produced notable police officers such as the late Oba Timothy Omobare, who was the first Edo person to rise to the enviable post of Deputy Inspector General of police, DIG,
Failure to raise the needed funds for the proposed school despite promises by wealthy individuals and the government, stalled the project.
The only visible attempt to get the project off ground came was said to have come from an prominent son, who committed a substantial portion of his wealth into the project, leading to the fencing of the expanse of land earmarked for the school as well as the rehabilitation of a dilapidated structure, some wood works and the erection of pillars for the bungalow
Financial constraints again was said to have forced the work to a halt work, coupled with the volte face by donors particularly after IGP Arase retired.
