Integrated farms are flagship for increased food production - Ahmed
By DADA AYOKHAI
The Managing Director of Benin Owena River Basin Development Authority, BORDA, Engr Saliu Ahmed, is quite hopeful about the workability of the integrated farm models recently embarked upon by the Authority in addressing the food security challenges facing the country.
The BORDA management recently commissioned some integrated farms in Edo North senatorial district as well as other parts of the state.
Three of such farm models, already operational, are located in Auchi in Etsako West; Okpe and Uneme N'ekhua in Akoko-Edo
They are, in the short to middle term, expected to serve as "production hubs", while in the long term become centres for processing, training and the integration of both old and modern agricultural practices.
Describing the farm models in superlative terms as a "bold and flagship innovation" by BORDA, Engr Ahmed said it will not only act as catalyst for accelerated food production but will also help inspire youths in the various catchment localities to regard farming as a fruitful venture
He made this disclosure in his key note address at the just ended national water conference held in Benin, Edo State.
In particular, he stated the integrated farms, borrowing largely from the successful Songhai experience, will radically transform agricultural practices in the state.
