Arafat-Mosque symbolizes spiritual growth of Auchi, others - Saliu Ahmed
By DADA AYOKHAI
This year's Auchi Day celebration may have come and gone but the memory lingers in the minds of Auchi indigenes across the globe who partook in the event.
Besides rekindling nostalgic feelings, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie among participants and showcasing the rich cultural heritage of the ancient city, the 25th Auchi edition will probably go down in history as the most spectacular.
In the spirit of brotherhood, the event served as a melting pot for new friendships and the building of bridges and alliances.
Without talking anything away from the Auchi Day programme, a major highpoint of the event was the grand opening ceremony of the magnificent Arafat Mosque, held on the eve of the event.
To demonstrate the importance attached to the mosque, the Otaru of Auchi, HRH H. A. Momoh, Ikelebe 111), devoted an entire six pages of his address speaking about the significance and genesis of the Arafat Mosque in the spiritual life of the people as well as Auchi Kingdom.
According to the Otaru, the Auchi "Arafat Mosque" is the second in the world, after the one in Saudi Arabia, adding a new chapter had been opened in the spiritual Odyssey of the people in a bid to promote peace, prosperity and happiness among the people.
Taking a cue from the Otaru, Engr Saliu Ahmed, a prominent son of Auchi, said the January 8 event is particularly "symbolic", adding Allah in His infinite mercies has been generous to the kingdom and its developmental strides.
Engr Ahmed, the Managing Director of Benin Owena River Basin Development Authority, BORDA, and one of the few illustrious sons of Auchi community playing a critical role in its rapid transformation, stressed the difficulty of divorcing the giant strides made by the community from the hands of Allah in the life of the people.
He said, "We should not take it for granted the central role of Allah in the affairs of man and His benevolence has been sufficient for Auchi community. The Auchi "Arafat Mosque" will not only bring succour but also unite the people in a common faith.
Engr Ahmed, in particular, commended organisers of the Auchi Day for their excellent performance in both the timing and sequencing of the event, adding, Auchi community in generality is the greatest beneficiary.
