IYuku Elders petition Gov Obaseki over acquisition of School land by Village Head

By DADA AYOKHAI
The Elders of Iyuku Community, Uzairue clan, Etsako West local government area have taken the initiative to protect what belongs to the community irrespective of whose ox is gored .

Recently, the Iyuku Elders across the 4 quarters  that make up the Community wrote a petition to the state government over the appropriation of the land belonging to Community Secondary School, Uku Secondary School by the Community  village Head, chief Zekeri Abubakar.

The petition titled  The fraudulent encroachment, appropriation and take over of  the land belonging to Uku Secondary Commercial School, Iyuku, Uzairue, Etsako West LGA Edo state by  Chief Zekeri Abubakar:

The petition  was signed by Mr. Chandos James Oyaluna,                          Mr. John Afekhena(Ugbenor Quarters)    (Olele Quarters)-Mr. Momoh Atemoagbor(Iyakhala Quarters)

According to the petitioners,  the  Iyuku community, the second largest community in Uzairue Clan, got a secondary school  to cater for the educational needs of its teeming population  in the mid-70s.

The school became a reality, due to the commitment of indigenes who donated  lands  and also  gave their  financial support through levies and donations.
  .
The Community leaders recently  observed that a new building is being constructed on a portion of a large expanse of land belonging to the school.

The petition  read thus:
"at first, we had thought that the school authority or Edo State Government through the Ministry of Education, was behind the construction as a measure of improving the facilities in the school, many of which are quite old and dilapidated.

"However, upon our enquiries, we found, to our utmost surprise, that the  village head, Chief Abubakar, is responsible for the construction of building on the said land.

"Thinking that Chief Abubakar may have acted in error, we reached out to him through some elders and those who are close to him, to let him know that the land belongs to the secondary school and thus a public asset, which should not be encroached upon or appropriated by anyone, no matter how highly placed."

"Despite this, Chief Abubakar has continued with the construction of the building without restraints.

"Based on this, we wrote a letter dated 6 December 2021 to the governor  reiterating the above position and at the same time, reminding him of our collective responsibility to protect the land as a public asset.

"Rather than allowed himself to be guided by our advice, Chief Abubakar has remained adamant and boast that he will deal ruthlessly with anyone who stands in his way or questions his authority over any land or property in the community", the petition said.

The Community called on the governor to use his good offices to cause investigation to be conducted into this case with a view to restoring the land to the school and ensuring that anyone found to have encroached or forcefully appropriated the land belonging to the school is made to face the full weight of the law.

Several  attempts to get the response from the village Head prove abortive as his phone was  switched off
