Ihonvbere to add blocks of 6 classrooms to Uhonmora Grammar School, Owan West LGA

NGO partners FG to rescue 1,156 pairs of eyes Intervention

By Deborah Coker  A total of 1,156 persons in Ovbiogie community in Ovia North East Local Government Area of Edo have benefitted from a free medical eyes services intervention The intervention was provided by an NGO, Care Vision Support Initiative (CAVSI), in partnership with the Federal Government, and funded by the TY Danjuma Foundation. Speaking with newsmen at Ovbiogie, Dr Fwangshak Kumbak, team lead for CAVSI, said the five-day intervention began on Monday. He said 1,264 persons registered for the free medical eyes services, but 1,156 persons reported for consultation. He said 110 cataracts surgeries, 23 apterygial surgeries, six congenital cataracts, and two other surgeries were carried out on beneficiaries. “We also carried out refraction with 716 glasses issued, while 688 drugs were dispensed. “We screened 515 secondary school students, and 224 primary school pupils. “We trained 16 teachers and 20 health workers from the locality on basic eye care services,’’ he...

Jail break foils at Benin correctional center

BY DADA AYOKHAI AN attempted jail break at the Nigerian Correction Center in Benin was  foiled by officials of the Center and other security agencies. Sporadic gun shots were heard around the precient of the Correction Center even as security men condoned Sapele Road and directed motorists to adjoining streets.  A statement by Mr Aminu S. Suleman, the Command's Public Relations Officer (PRO) explained that , "At about 12.30pm, some awaiting  trial inmates especially the recaptured escapees started protest which led to a confrontation between them and the convicted inmates.  "Reinforcement was immediately mobilized from the State headquarters to enforce law and order.  "The situation has been completely controlled and the Custodial Centre is calm. Prof Ihonvbere's condolence message was conveyed by a high power delegation  who were at the deceased family house village  at  Ake. The delegation  was led by the Political Adviser, to the Hon member,  Rev Andrew Uadia. Mr Chris Nehikhare, State Publicity Secretary of the party, announced this while briefing newsmen on the state of preparedness of the chapter for the convention. Those alleged to have involved in the said anti-party activities are Nash Momodu, Yahaya Umoru, Hassan Bawa, Aruna Muhammed, Shaka Victor Momoh, Aruna Oseni. The lifeless body riddled with bullets of the former scribe of the Owan East local government has been deposited in the morgue. Edo IDPs record 90 percent success in NABTEB exams

By Deborah Coker  The management of the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp, Uhogua, Edo, says that 90 per cent of the IDPs students who sat for the June/July National Business and Technical Examinations Board (NABTEB) were successful. Pst. Evelyn Omigie, the Assistant Coordinator of the camp, managed by the Home for the Needy Foundation, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday, in Benin. Omigie said that 117 students from the camp sat for the examination, out of which 99 came out successful in the result released recently. She added that 59 of the students enrolled for science subjects and 43 for arts subjects, out of which 45 for science and 39 for arts, respectively, cleared all their papers. She added that the 15 students that enrolled for social sciences in the exams were all successful. Agbabi Replaces S .S Mayaki As APC Edo North Senatorial Vice-Chairman

By DADA AYOKHAI The outcome of the Edo State All Progressives Congress (APC) state's congress to elect party officers which took place in Benin, saw the displacement of Barrister S. S Mayaki as the party's Vice Chairman for Edo North Senatorial District. The lawyer turned politician, Mayaki, was replaced by Hon Aslem Agbabi also from Akoko Edo local government. The replacement of Barrister Mayaki by Hon Aslem Agbabi, a  former member of Edo State House of Assembly and Chairman of Akoko-Edo local government is expected to change the power play in Akoko Edo  and Edo North politics ahead of the National Assembly Election in 2023. The duo of Mayaki and Agbabi, though from the same party but belong to different blogs within the party.  It is claimed that the emergence of Hon Agbabi  might put a halt to the dominance of  Akpatason Peter, a member of the House of Representativese  in Akoko Edo politics.

Court stops PDP from suspending Dan Orbih

By DADA AYOKHAI A High Court of the Federal Capital Territory sitting at Maitama, on Thursday, barred the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, from recognising or acting upon a resolution of its chapter in Edo State, which ratified the suspension of its National Vice Chairman (South-South), Chief Dan Orbih for allegedly engaging in anti-party activities. The court, in an ex-parte order that was issued by Justice O. A. Adeniyi, ordered the party not to give effect to Orbih’s purported suspension, pending the determination of a suit pending before it. Justice Adeniyi directed that the order should be served on the PDP forthwith, even as he adjourned hearing of the suit till December 10. It will be recalled that the Edo State chapter of the PDP had last Monday, ratified the suspension of Orbih and others accused of sabotaging the interest of the party.
